Ionad Thùisinis

Huisinis Gateway

We built this facility in 2017 in cooperation with the local crofters, to improve visitor management at an increasingly popular area of machair in Huisinis crofting township, with its attractive beaches and stunning location.

The gateway building provides toilets, showers, snacks, and shelter all year round, it is open from 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday.  A 24-hour toilet is also available.

The designated parking areas either side of the building are designed to limit impacts on the machair habitat, and the campervan hook-ups 400m before the township help keep vehicle pressure to a minimum.   Please follow all vehicular signage in the area and note that parking on the machair or the beachhead is strictly not permitted.

A chemical disposal point and freshwater standpipe is provided adjacent to the building, alongside general waste and recycling bins for plastics, cans, and glass bottles.

In 2022, we took the decision to install parking meters, due to donation income not meeting our operating costs.  All parking meters accept contactless card payments only – cash payment is not possible. Current tariffs are shown HERE

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT TAKE BOOKINGS; the facilities are operated on a first come first served basis.

Our income at this site is spent on the following activities:
• Utilities and staff costs to operate the facilities
• Maintenance of the faciliti
es and local footpaths
• Funding local community projects
• Sustaining local crofting practices

Facilities available: toilets & showers, vending machines, indoor seating, chemical disposal point, freshwater standpipe, recycling facilities for plastics, cans, glass and interpretation/local information.

Overnight parking is tolerated, however please bear in mind this is a car-park on croft land not a campsite.

Getting there...

Turn west off the main spinal route (A859) between Tarbert and Stornoway just north of Ardhasaig.  The road from here is single track with passing places, with lots of sharp twists and turns.  Continue along this road to the very end, despite being only 13 miles, it can be an over 30 minute drive from the main spinal route.

For other locations where overnight parking is permitted in North Harris, please have a look here.

The North Harris Trust gratefully acknowledges Outer Hebrides LEADER 2014-2020, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Comhaile nan Eilean Siar, Scottish Landfill Communities Fund, Bord na Gaidhlig and The Mushroom Trust for funding the Huisinis Gateway Project. This project was part-financed by The Scottish Government and The European Community Outer Hebrides LEADER 2014-2020 Programme
